The Ranch Pickup

by Bob E. Lewis

We had an old Ford pickup,
That we used out on the ranch,
The left fender it was missing,
And the right one was a good match,

The seat springs, they were broken down,
They left you sitting on the frame,
When those old roads got really rough,
                 Your rear end became enflamed.

The heater worked in the summer,
The air conditioner started in late fall.
The windshield, it was cracked all over,
There were no side windows left atall.

The radiator it did leak somewhat,
The oil pan did the same.
The tires were as bald as a billiard ball,
		 It's retirement still hadn't came.

Old Jake was the official driver
                 Designated by all the rest,
Cause he could usually get it started,
And at keeping it running, he's the best.

The bed was barely hanging on,
                 One bolt was left intact,
Jake kept one eye on the road ahead,
And the other one looking back.

Cause we kept all our fencing tools,
In a box there in a long tray.
And if by chance we lost them,
The boss would surely make us pay.

We asked one day when he would buy,
A new one for us to drive.
He said in a very unfriendly way,
"That one was new in fifty-five.

You boys are going to have to learn,
Money just don't grow on trees.
                 I don't think it'll be very soon,
When you get a new one of these".
